The problem for Obama is that he's screwed either way. If he messes up big time, everyone will say "I told you so, we should have had McCain". If he's does an Ok job then people might say "McCain would have done better". There's a lot of pressure on the man to get it right, and I'm sure he's all too aware of that.

I personally hope that he turns about to be another Abraham Lincoln, got some balls and gets the job done. And to speak of Clinton, for all his charm and "womanizing" he too got the job done, he had the US in great shape and then Bush came along and undid all of the good work Clinton had done. I couldn't care less if the President of the United States is getting sexual favors from the Whitehouse janitor, so long as the job is getting done (the job of running the country and running it well that is).

@warmaker: you are exactly right about Obama being liked mostly for his excellence in public speaking. Most people couldn't even name one "good" thing he has done while in public office, of which is a pretty short history. Not that I am saying he hasn't done any good things, just that your average American pays little to no attention to what is actually going on the the real political world because it really doesn't affect them enough to care. They have jobs to do, homes to take care of, children to watch after, and maybe some sleep if there is any time left over.

@DB: And don't give Clinton too much credit. He got lucky by being in office while the USA was on one of the greatest economic upswings in all of history, of which he had little to nothing to do with. And now we are having to deal with the effects of those "great economic times" of which were somewhat inflated and are now having to correct themselves. Don't make the mistake of thinking that the president has total and ultimate control of EVERYTHING that happens in the USA.

agreed. I am not saying that the President doesn't have a fair amount of control for one person, just that I think a lot of people think that everything that goes on in this country is either his success or failure and that just isn't the case. And I agree with you that the US needs to back off on some of it's over-reaching foreign policies. That is a fairly significant part of our multi-trillion dollar national debt. We give any and all countries any money that they "need" and then they can pay us back "whenever". We need to take care of home first.

Re:Don't forget to vote America!

@ Bee: Your statement "there has probably never been a nation as powerful as the US, in the history of mankind, politically, financially and materially" is incorrect. If we're looking at countries in terms of culture and power, we have to look at it in terms of how they stood respective to their time. The Roman and the Chinese Empires even though worlds apart back in their days dominated their regions without question. The Mongol Empire in times of Genghis Khan extended across half the known world back then. The British Empire at it's height stretched across all the continents. They had money, power, you name it. Hell even pre and early World War II Germany was incredibly powerful. Modern US wouldn't dare take on the world like that.

In any case, as I always say, anyone with power can and will abuse it. It's in human nature to do so.

I think that the biggest thing that pisses people off about the modern day States is that they go where they're not wanted. Troy mentioned people asking for help, but that's a whole load of crap. No one wants the US presence near them. Both sides will inevitably get bombed and shit will only end up worse than it would have been originally. In the history of the world there has always traditionally been a winner and a loser in every war. To the winner go the spoils. Simple as that. Nowadays, when the US rocks in, everybody is a loser and somehow everyone always ends up owing money to the States.

The one thing that people in the US don't seem to get is that people from other countries dislike the government and the brute military forces that get sent into places where they shouldn't be, not the people. However it's not so much the "blind support" of the US public for their own troops (which is normal patriotism for any country), but rather the willingness to tell everyone else that they're in the wrong based on what you see through the filtered news channels without even being there and understanding what's happening that pisses people off. On the same token I know people who push for anti-US propaganda because it's suddenly become the popular thing to do.

In short... both sides are wrong. Let the governments fight their fights, but as people, for your own damn good, before you start making judgment calls learn a little bit about the other side. Look up the history of Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Kosovo. Look a little deeper and you'll see why people fight. The media is filtered, but at lest over the past 15 or so years we've been blessed with this wonderful thing called the Internet which allows us to share unfiltered information and to share our thoughts, which prior to that we usually kept hidden. For those of you in the US, look outside of your own world for a moment and realize that there are countries where it's downright impossible to find a job that pays more than a few hundred dollars a month if that. Realize that this isn't just something you look at for five minutes and forget about as it happens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year for the rest of their lives! That's a bloody long time. You don't have to "help" but learning about what's out there will do you a lot of good.

As for those outside of the US... if you have regular Internet, check out their history. Even though it's a new country it does have a lot of interesting history. Learn a little about the issues that happen in the US and understand that people don't always see things from your view point. Granted, that's easier said than done.

The best thing for everyone would be to travel more. See the world. Each country, each city, each person you meet will change your view of this world ever so slightly. The more things you see the more angles you'll have on any given subject.

For your information Lucian, I have traveled the world and probably been to places poorer than you have been. I spent over a month in the country of Namibia (southern Africa...look it up on a map cause I am sure you've never heard about it) traveling around and ministering to some of the poorest people in the world. A lot of whom lived in homes made of discarded road signs, cardboard, trash, etc. So don't assume that we are all so ignorant, please. The point I was trying to make is that the people of the United States get a bad rap, as you stated it has become the "cool" thing to hate us, and if all of the relief efforts that come out of America (government based, private based, etc.) were to completely stop there are a lot of people all around the world that would be in a much worse position then they are now.

Re:Don't forget to vote America!

@ troy: Now you're the one assuming and doing a pretty piss poor job at it. First and foremost I didn't direct my comments at you. I understand that for every generalization there are exceptions, but I also understand that for generalizations exist they must have some point of basis which a certain group has in common. My comment at travel was thrown everyone's way and not for purposes of showing anybody up, but rather to pass on advice I myself found useful. Traveling to different places exposes you to things that you never even thought existed and it changes perspective on life, which in my case has been positive. Sometimes hard to swallow but on the whole a very enlightening experience and there is no reason why I wouldn't want to share that with others.

As for your comment about you being places poorer than I have been, you are fully talking out of your ass now and what's more you're doing it for no other purpose than to be a prick. This is exactly what I was talking about. You spent a month in Namibia helping a handful of people and you feel all high and mighty because of it, actually convincing yourself that you know what life is like there better than everyone else you meet. Please, I knew of Namibia when I was ten years old, not because I wanted to but because I had to. Don't take me the wrong way, at least you've been there and seen some of the things that happen, which is good, but don't think that just because you spent a month there you know what it's like to live there and where everyone else has been. I'm not talking out of my ass here mate. I've been places and I've seen a lot of things. Hell I've lived in and have family in some of the places you wouldn't dream of going on a holiday to. I've known first hand what it's like to be at the lowest end of the spectrum as well as some of the higher heights. I've been very blessed in life in that regard and have seen and experienced many things. This is not to say that I saw more than anyone I meet. Far from it. I'm not that ignorant. I just try to share what I do know and I throw it out in everyone's direction for everyone's benefit.

You've seen homes made of discarded road signs, cardboard boxes and trash? I used to run through entire blocks like that as a kid. We had one just down the road from us. Hell, I used to play football with some of the kids from that block. We used to call it Cardboard City. My point was not to bag on the US. It's just that I've lived in both the "Western" and "Eastern" parts of the world as well as third world countries. Things just work differently. You have poor people in every place across the world, but its drastically different in a country like Zimbabwe and a country like Switzerland. As such, let's try to pull out the elements of you and me out of this conversation and focus on the actual topic.

As both of us say United States gets bagged because it is the cool thing to do, but it became that way for a reason. Think. In the past 100 years. How many wars can you think back of? How many of those wars was the US involved in?! How many of those wars were on US soil? See my point?

Like you said, there are people who would be in a worse position, but for every country/group that falls, another would benefit. As things stand now, both countries get screwed and the benefit goes to the US government. It screws up the balance of power in that region and no one actually gets anywhere. After a war happens the last things those countries need is a multi million/billion dollar debt. In those cases, it's best if the US never gets involved in the first place... and more and more people world wide don't want the US anywhere near them. I understand exactly why a lot of countries feel that way, but at the same time a crapload of people are just jumping on the bandwaggon at this stage.

Hopefully the election of Obama means more internal emphasis and bettering the country as opposed to pumping more funding into the military and screwing up everybody else's worlds.

Re:Don't forget to vote America!

@Troy - Lucian has a point about your comments with Nimibia. First, you make yourself sound like a bad person when you say, "It's in southern Africa, go find a map. In fact, you probably don't know where Africa is. It's on the globe." That's insulting and not going to get your point across. Second, as Lucian also pointed out, when you say you were there and you helped out, good for you. But you also sound like you're bragging about it. "Hey, look at what an amazing humanitarian I am." It makes me think of celebrities who support a cause.... for a week. It shouldn't be about what you did, it should be about how they benefited. Claiming to have experienced the worst of all of us is also not cool. There are some nasty parts of the world, and we may have been there.

I was in the U.S. Marines for 6 years. I've been to those places. I've seen the armpits of the world and 'living there' for a month does not give you an accurate depiction of what life is like. You knew you would eventually go back home. You weren't in a hopeless and helpless situation. It's good to support causes around the world, but don't associate yourself with them. When universities in the U.S. have kids spend a night outdoors during the winter to bring awareness to homelessness, I shake my head. At home, we called it camping. It doesn't give them a true view of what it's like to be homeless. The same goes with you and Africa.

@Lucian - Solid words, man. I may correct people when they're wrong, but I sure as hell don't tell them their own business. I would never accuse a guy I didn't know of not being able to identify Laos on a map. It's not about the individual experiences, but the world as a whole. I'm a fan of world cultures and I like learning about people on this little planet. Good effort on you for trying to keep the "you" and "me" away from the discussion and refocus the conversation on the big picture. People should travel and experience everything there is to offer before forming their opinions. It's a shame that's not how most folks feel.

@Everyone else - Tighten your chinstraps*, ladies. Jump in with your 2 cents!

*Cultural Note : The chinstrap is a small device used for securing a helmet onto a player's head. It is a reference often found in American Football, or as my buddy from Peru calls it, "North American Armoured Wankball." The more you know!

I am sorry for the way I responded, I realize it was a bit harsh and I don't know your personal situation or where you come from. You're right that I don't know exactly what it is like for the poor people that I spent time with in Namibia, and I don't claim to, but I went over there right after high school and spent that month there with them and that was all I was able to do at that time. The reason I posted this information wasn't to say, "look at me and how wonderful I am" but I just wanted to say that people in the US are capable and do care about people in other countries around the world, myself included. I really don't want this to get into a discussion about "you" and "me" either. I think people all over the world, not just the US, would do well to look outside their tiny little self-circles and get a better grasp on things. Unfortunately, in my opinion, most people really don't care enough about people that they don't know and probably won't ever meet to really do anything about it. Those that do are often times the minority.

He's one of us, and understands us, and makes decisions based on that...In theory. In truth, we got away from that a long time ago. Presidents are generally good old boys, or rich, or from walks of life that MAYBE 1 percent of our country gets to experience. Even Obama, supposed champion of change, has had a fuckton of advantages that the average person will never see. If you look at old presidents, like Washington or something, they were farmers and military men. In fact, most of our early presidents were inventors or diplomats or people that worked the earth. These days, our presidents probably haven't done a days hard labor in their lives.

But what do we do about it? A blood coup? People versus the military in the streets? I'm not happy about the situation, but it's not so atrocious that the country should bleed for it. Yet.

But I wonder, did this start in politics? It seems like to me, and I'm nowhere near an authority on the subject, but advertising in general seems to always be pushing the boundaries. It used to be the case that companies would never refer to other brands by name, using phrases like "the leading brand". Now, it seems that it's perfectly acceptable not only to outright name the "leading brand" but insult them. Classic case in point, the Apple Mac ads; "Hello, I'm a Mac. And I'm a PC", where "PC" is clearly meant to represent Bill Gates and is made to look like a complete idiot in comparison to "Mac". Microsoft have hit back with some lame "I'm a PC" adverts but they are not nearly as funny. Interestingly, Microsoft choose NOT to name or attempt to shame Apple Mac, but it's only a matter of time before we have Celebrity DeathMatch for real.

Sorry, this post is a bit incoherent but it's early in the morning.

Re:Don't forget to vote America!

Yeah, the world in general is getting to be a more aggressive place. And as far as "leaders" and "rulers" go, the ones in power are not going to give it up once they have it and when forced to they are only wanting to give it up to those who are most like themselves. As an American I am grateful for the good things that are set up in this country that most people would file under some sort of government or public office; i.e. police and rescue departments, judicial laws, all of the freedoms that we posses, etc. But unfortunately along with that it seems that this "government machine" has been created and now that it is in place and has control there really is no way of stopping it and like Lucian said, "It's not time for a bloody coup, yet." At least I am not volunteering to take up arms. (unless they want to battle it out in WeeWar, in which case I would consider it)

Re:Don't forget to vote America!

Um, Troy, some people hate the US because it frequently does really nasty things to keep itself on top. It's all democracy and justice and whatever inside, but a brutal game of king of the hill outside.

Coca Cola, for example, periodically hires paramilitary thugs to kill employees during working hours when they step out of line and demand silly things like wages and rights. Did you know that? Probably not. It's cause we live in a country of covert but strict censorship on some themes. Like that war in Iraq...yeah, it is still happening. I know, I forgot too. It's because the US gov has forbidden journalists to report on war-like aspects of the war. And no pictures are permitted of essentially everything that would remind us that a war exists...like combat, dead anyone, wounded anyone, blown up or damaged anything, pictures of funerals, etc. If it looks like war, It won't get published in the land of the free...well maybe not so free.

Sorry....no humor in this post. My humor left me a little while ago. Darkbee slapped me back to my senses recently, but I could use another slap on the cheek bee (wink, wink). Ahem.
